Sketchy Weather, Solid Bite — Week 1 of Snapper Season Is In the Books
The first week of Snapper Season brought mixed weather, steady seas, and strong early-season catches across the Gulf. While storms have been popping up daily, the windows between them have produced excellent snapper limits, solid king action, and a surprising early push of mahi.
From Mexico Beach → PCB → Destin → Fort Walton → Pensacola → Orange Beach, here’s what you need to know heading into Week 2.

Notes: Slight morning storms; fishable window midday.

Notes: Best weather day of the weekend; light chop.
Monday (June 1 — Federal For‑Hire Opens)
Winds: NW → W 5 kt
Seas: 1 ft or less
Notes: Calmest day of the week; excellent for offshore runs.
Tuesday (June 2)
Winds: Light → S in afternoon
Seas: 1 ft or less
Notes: Great nearshore and reef conditions.

Red Snapper
Strong opening week across Destin, PCB, and Orange Beach
Most boats reporting quick limits on public and private numbers
Fish are aggressive, holding tight to structure in 60–120 ft
Larger fish (18–22") coming from deeper wrecks (140–180 ft)
Scamp Grouper
Excellent early‑season bite
Many charters running snapper + scamp combo trips
Best depth: 180–260 ft
Mahi
Early push of schoolies
Weedlines forming offshore
Several charters reporting bonus mahi on snapper trips
Kings & Spanish
Kings are thick on nearshore reefs
Spanish still heavy along the beaches
Great trolling conditions between storms
This is shaping up to be one of the better early-season snapper years.

Scamp Grouper — strong in 180–260 ft
Mahi — scattered but increasing
Blackfin Tuna — early morning around rips
Mingo (Vermillion) — thick on natural bottom
Nearshore
King Mackerel — excellent action
Spanish Mackerel — heavy along beaches
Cobia — last stragglers
Inshore
Speckled Trout — early morning topwater bite
Redfish — strong around docks & grass edges
Mangrove Snapper — showing early around bridges
