Sketchy Weather, Solid Bite — Week 1 of Snapper Season Is In the Books

The first week of Snapper Season brought mixed weather, steady seas, and strong early-season catches across the Gulf. While storms have been popping up daily, the windows between them have produced excellent snapper limits, solid king action, and a surprising early push of mahi.

From Mexico Beach → PCB → Destin → Fort Walton → Pensacola → Orange Beach, here’s what you need to know heading into Week 2.



NOAA WEATHER & SEA CONDITIONS (May 29 – June 4)

Based on NWS Marine Forecast GMZ650–655 and surrounding Gulf zones 

Friday (May 29)

  • Winds: SW 5–10 kt

  • Seas: ~2 ft

  • Notes: Scattered showers; manageable seas.

Saturday (May 30)

  • Winds: SW 10–15 kt

  • Seas: ~2 ft

  • Notes: Slight morning storms; fishable window midday.

Sunday (May 31)

  • Winds: W 5–10 kt

  • Seas: ~2 ft

  • Notes: Best weather day of the weekend; light chop.

Monday (June 1 — Federal For‑Hire Opens)

  • Winds: NW → W 5 kt

  • Seas: 1 ft or less

  • Notes: Calmest day of the week; excellent for offshore runs.

Tuesday (June 2)

  • Winds: Light → S in afternoon

  • Seas: 1 ft or less

  • Notes: Great nearshore and reef conditions.

Wednesday (June 3)

  • Winds: SW 5–10 kt

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Storm chances increase; watch radar.

Thursday (June 4)

  • Winds: SW 5–10 kt

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Typical early‑summer pattern; storms around.

BEST FISHING DAYS THIS WEEK

Best Overall:

June 1–2 (Monday–Tuesday)

  • Light winds

  • Seas 1 ft or less

  • Perfect for long offshore runs, snapper, scamp, and mahi


Secondary Good Days:

Sunday (May 31)

  • Light chop

  • Stable weather window

Most Challenging Days:

May 29–30 & June 3–4

  • Higher storm chances

  • Afternoon pop‑ups

  • Seas 2–3 ft with occasional bumps

SNAPPPER SEASON — WEEK 1 OVERVIEW

What we’re seeing from the docks

Red Snapper

  • Strong opening week across Destin, PCB, and Orange Beach

  • Most boats reporting quick limits on public and private numbers

  • Fish are aggressive, holding tight to structure in 60–120 ft

  • Larger fish (18–22") coming from deeper wrecks (140–180 ft)

Scamp Grouper

  • Excellent early‑season bite

  • Many charters running snapper + scamp combo trips

  • Best depth: 180–260 ft

Mahi

  • Early push of schoolies

  • Weedlines forming offshore

  • Several charters reporting bonus mahi on snapper trips

Kings & Spanish

  • Kings are thick on nearshore reefs

  • Spanish still heavy along the beaches

  • Great trolling conditions between storms

This is shaping up to be one of the better early-season snapper years.


WHAT’S BITING (May 29 – June 4)

Offshore

  • Red Snapper — aggressive, consistent limits

  • Scamp Grouper — strong in 180–260 ft

  • Mahi — scattered but increasing

  • Blackfin Tuna — early morning around rips

  • Mingo (Vermillion) — thick on natural bottom


Nearshore

  • King Mackerel — excellent action

  • Spanish Mackerel — heavy along beaches

  • Cobia — last stragglers


Inshore

  • Speckled Trout — early morning topwater bite

  • Redfish — strong around docks & grass edges

  • Mangrove Snapper — showing early around bridges

EVENTS & NOTES

  • Federal For‑Hire Snapper Season opens June 1

  • Destin Cobia Tournament — wrapping up

  • Bay Point Billfish Open prep underway

  • Afternoon storms expected all week — plan early departures

  • 2026 RED SNAPPER SEASON — OFFICIAL DATES

    Federal For‑Hire (Charter Boats – Alabama, Destin, PCB)

    June 1 – October 26, 2026

    Alabama Private Anglers

    Opens: May 22, 2026 Closes: When quota (664,552 lbs) is met OR December 31, 2026

    New for 2026:

    • Open 7 days a week

    • Continuous season until quota is reached

    • Limits: 2 per person, 16" minimum

    Florida Private Anglers (Destin / PCB)

    Opens: May 22, 2026 Closes: July 31, 2026

    Reopens:

    • Sept 1 – Oct 4

    • Oct 9–11, 16–18, 23–25, 30–Nov 1

    • Nov 7–8, 14–15, 21–22

    • Nov 26–29 (Thanksgiving)

    • Dec 5–6, 12–13, 19–20

    • Dec 25–27 (Christmas)

    • Jan 1–4, 2027

    Total: 140 days — the longest private‑angler season Florida has ever run.
