Snapper Season Opens — And the Gulf Is Lining Up Perfectly

The Gulf Coast is electric right now. Boats are fueling up. Reefs are loaded. And the weather is finally giving anglers the window we’ve been waiting for.

From Mexico Beach → Panama City Beach → Destin → Fort Walton → Pensacola → Orange Beach, this week marks the official kickoff of Red Snapper Season — and conditions could not be better.




Weather & Sea Conditions (May 22–28 — UPDATED)

NOAA‑verified forecast for Destin, PCB, Pensacola & Orange Beach

Friday (May 22)

  • Winds: S/SE 10–15 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Light chop, scattered storms early/late.

Saturday (May 23 — Snapper Opening Weekend)

  • Winds: S 5–10 knots

  • Seas: Around 2 ft

  • Notes: One of the calmest days of the week. Excellent for private boats & charters.

Sunday (May 24)

  • Winds: SE 10–12 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Slight afternoon bump but still very fishable.

Monday (May 25)

  • Winds: SE 10–15 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft nearshore, 3–4 ft offshore

  • Notes: Offshore zones may see brief 4–5 ft pulses overnight.

Tuesday (May 26)

  • Winds: SE 10–15 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Typical late‑May pattern; morning storms possible.

Wednesday (May 27)

  • Winds: S/SE 10–15 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Stable, predictable, and ideal for bottom fishing.

Thursday (May 28)

  • Winds: SE 10–15 knots

  • Seas: 2–3 ft

  • Notes: Improving clarity; great for snapper, kings, and mingo.

Angler Summary

  • Best days: Saturday & Sunday

  • Most stable: Tuesday–Thursday

  • Offshore caution: Sunday night–Monday may see 3–5 ft offshore

  • Overall: A green‑light week for Snapper Season kickoff — safe, fishable, and productive

Alabama Private Anglers

Opens: May 22, 2026 Closes: When quota (664,552 lbs) is met OR Dec 31, 2026

New for 2026:

  • Open 7 days a week

  • Continuous season until quota is reached

  • Limits: 2 per person, 16" minimum


Florida Private Anglers (Destin / PCB)

Opens: May 22, 2026 Closes: July 31, 2026

Reopens:

  • Sept 1 – Oct 4

  • Oct 9–11, 16–18, 23–25, 30–Nov 1

  • Nov 7–8, 14–15, 21–22

  • Nov 26–29 (Thanksgiving)

  • Dec 5–6, 12–13, 19–20

  • Dec 25–27 (Christmas)

  • Jan 1–4, 2027

Total: 140 days — the longest private‑angler season Florida has ever run.


What’s Biting This Week

Offshore

  • Red Snapper — Stacked on public & private structure; aggressive and ready for opening day.

  • Scamp Grouper — Strong in 180–260 ft.

  • Mahi — Increasing numbers as warm water pushes in.

  • Blackfin Tuna — Early morning around rips and temp breaks.

  • Vermillion Snapper (Mingo) — Thick on natural bottom.

Nearshore

  • King Mackerel — Excellent action around buoys and bait pods.

  • Spanish Mackerel — Heavy along the beaches.

  • Cobia — A few late stragglers still around.

Inshore

  • Speckled Trout — Early morning topwater bite is heating up.

  • Redfish — Consistent around docks, grass edges, and points.

  • Mangrove Snapper — Showing early around bridges and structure.

SNAPPPER SEASON ENERGY IS REAL

The docks are buzzing. The reefs are loaded. And the weather is lining up like it was planned.
