As we kick off December, the rut is unfolding at different speeds across the Southeast, and this week’s weather is set to shake things up for hunters. Here’s your full report and hunting forecast for December 1–7.
🌤️ Weather Forecast (Dec 1–7):
December 1–3: Expect rainy conditions across much of the Southeast, with some wet snow possible over higher terrain in Tennessee.
December 4–7: Snow showers are likely, especially in northern areas and higher elevations.
Throughout the week, temperatures will fluctuate, with chilly mornings and cool afternoons. Rain and snow may make for tough travel but can also increase deer movement, especially as fronts pass through.
🦌 Kentucky:Rut activity remains slow, but the incoming rain and possible snow could get bucks moving, especially near bedding areas and travel corridors. Watch for sudden bursts of chasing after the weather breaks.
🦌 Tennessee:The rut is in full swing! Bucks are chasing does and revisiting scrape lines. The mix of rain, wet snow, and snow showers will keep deer on the move, especially as conditions change. Hunt during breaks in precipitation for the best action.
🦌 Alabama:Bucks are still in bachelor groups and shedding velvet. Rain early in the week will keep deer close to cover, but as the weather clears, expect increased movement. Persimmons and acorns remain key food sources.
🦌 Georgia & South Carolina:Deer movement is slowing down, with many mature bucks locked down with does. Rain and cooler temperatures may push deer to feed more during daylight hours. Focus on thick cover and food sources, and be ready for a quick change in activity as the weather shifts.
🌳 Food & Habitat: Heavy mast crops from a wet spring and summer mean deer have plenty of food. White oaks, red oaks, and water oaks are loaded, but many acorns are still holding due to the warmth. Persimmons are a hot food source right now. Target travel corridors between bedding and feeding areas, and look for fresh rubs and scrapes.
🎯 Hunting Forecast & Tips:
Be flexible and ready to adapt to changing conditions.
Hunt longer hours—midday movement can be productive, especially during the rut.
Focus on thick cover, edges of food plots, and travel routes.
Watch for breaks in rain or snow, which can trigger increased buck activity.
If you’re seeing less movement, don’t get discouraged. The next hot doe or cold snap could change everything in a hurry.
From all of us at Bedsole Outdoor Adventures, I encourage you to share your rut stories and photos. Whether you’re seeing locked-down bucks or bachelor groups, every hunt is a new adventure. Stay safe, hunt smart, and let’s make the most of this exciting week in the Southeast!
Good luck and happy hunting,
